Norman Queer Alliance

Norman Queer Alliance is a community group for lesbian, transgendered, gay, bisexual, gender queer and other queer identified folk as well as queer loving straight allies living in Norman, OK.

We believe building community and looking out for each other is an effective tool against homophobia. Some of the things we do include organizing weekly events, producing a quarterly zine showcasing the art and writing of queer Oklahoma and hosting a list serve. Some of the events we have organized include queer art shows, concerts, film showings, dance parties and discussion groups.

Kayla Elliott is a lesbian Oklahoman woman who was violently attacked this week in a hate crime. The police aren’t being very helpful, if you can believe that, so Kayla needs help paying for legal expenses as well as medical expenses.

Anything you can spare will help. Please boost this and share it—our community will hopefully do its best to support Kayla, but help and acknowledgment from other communities and regions could make a huge impact.

Here’s an article for more information.

Spread the word and PLEASE donate if you can!

NQA Picnic this Saturday (the 5th)!

We’re having a NQA picnic this Saturday, May 5th, at Lions Park (corner of Flood and Symmes, parking off Pickard to the west—right by the Firehouse Art Center) at 3 pm! If you can and want to, bring some food or drinks. No matter what, come and hang out with us!

Facebook event is here! We hope to see you there.

Finally, a NQA meeting!

Let’s end the NQA hiatus and get together this Saturday! We can plan events, talk about our next zine, or whatever we feel like! And if we don’t have anything we feel like planning, we can just hang out! It’s been a while and the Earth has good coffee and good food.

When: Saturday, March 24th, 4:30pm-6:30pm
Where: The Earth Cafe and Deli, on Campus Corner (moved from their previous location to where Freebirds used to be, just around the corner!)

If you can make it, please try to RSVP here or via email (normanqueeralliance@gmail.com) so I can give the fine folks at the Earth a heads up if we need to! Hope to see you there!

Let’s have a NQA meeting!

Hey folks! I was thinking about trying to bring NQA out of its winter hibernation to have a meeting sometime this month to talk about anything we’d like to do this spring— making our zine, having get-togethers, organizing open mics, whatever! So y’all should tell me when would be good for you! I made a fancy Doodle for this, so if you follow the link, put in your name and check the time slots tha…t would work for you. Hopefully this’ll give me an idea of what days/times work the best. It’s not an exhaustive schedule, so if you have a suggestion on a meeting time (or place!) please comment and let me know!

If you’re anywhere near Oklahoma and have an interest in reproductive justice and/or rural/red state activism, you NEED to be at this conference! Read more about it here, and follow the link to register. There are also scholarships available if you need help covering the expense—contact the kind folks at the Center for Social Justice for instructions on how to apply! Do it before February 17th! (center.for.social.justice@ou.edu)

Seriously, you don’t want to miss this. Check out the list of panels and register now!

Register and then tell all your friends! Let’s have a huge, awesome, Okie queer presence at this conference!

“Dance, Robots, Dance! is based in Oklahoma, where there are sixty seven Native American tribes, more than any other state. While nobody can be expected to understand the history and current state of all Native Americans, it was especially disheartening to see such blatant cultural appropriation…

Sign this, y’all!

Check out this awesome Cissupremacy 101 blog by Kale, who’s part of our OK4RJ chosen family and an organizer for Norman Queer Alliance!

Okie queers! This is relevant to you (and other people, too, but whatever.) Something I wrote over at OK4RJ, which you should check out if you haven’t already!

Because if it is, I suggest you follow the amazing Oklahomans for Reproductive Justice (OK4RJ) now on Tumblr!

OK4RJ is an incredible organization run here in Norman with plenty of queer folks involved (myself included). So if you’re an Okie queer with an interest in reproductive justice (or if you’re not!) follow this Tumblr for some really awesome information! Then get involved and make some badass, like-minded friends while you’re at it!

This ain’t a NQA thing, but there’s a call for poetry submissions from trans* and genderqueer writers for an anthology scheduled for 2012. Click the link for specifics!
